This one took a little time for me. There were moments that hit me immediately, painfully beautiful, in that way where music almost makes you want to cry, but as a whole, Atomos initially felt more distant and ambient than I expected. I liked it, but I wasn’t sure I loved it.
I’m glad I kept coming back to it.
Atomos is an album that seems to ask you to slow down and meet it where it is, to listen intentionally and patiently. The more intentional I became about listening, the more it opened up. The strings, drones, space, repetition and huge sense of atmosphere gradually stopped feeling austere and started feeling incredibly immersive. There’s a quiet emotional gravity to it that doesn’t demand your attention so much as reward it.
The recording only adds to that. There’s so much space around everything, and on vinyl the little shifts in texture and dynamics become part of the experience, something you might not notice on the first listen can turn into something transformed on the second or third, again, while listening intentionally. It’s the kind of album that makes sitting down and actually listening feel worthwhile.
It wasn’t love at first listen in the traditional sense. It was better than that, it was one of those records I had to grow into, and that makes me appreciate it even more.
