Belgian death metal masters Aborted unleashed their most devastating statement with "Retrogore", their ninth studio album that served as both a celebration of the band's 20-year legacy and a memorial for the true essence of death metal. This critically acclaimed masterpiece received overwhelmingly positive reception upon release. The album marked a significant milestone for the band, showcasing their evolution while maintaining their signature brutality. Featuring relentless brutality, gut-wrenching drums, buzz-saw guitars, and guttural vocals deep from the abyss, "Retrogore" delivered in spades while introducing darker atmospheric elements and sinister melodiousness courtesy of the guitar duo Mendel bij de Leij and Ian Jekelis. Remarkable samples from horror movies with cult status were scattered throughout, while guest appearances from Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation), David Davidson (Revocation), Jason Keyser (Origin), and Julien Truchan (Benighted) felt perfectly integrated rather than forced. From the unassuming opener "Dellamorte Dellamore" to the total gorefest title track, this was shocking in the same way an '80s B-horror film is - brutal death metal in it's sheerest and most vicious form, the epitome of aural horror.
