With its in-house staff and recognizable sound, the Philadelphia International label was an early 70s equivalent of 60s Tamla/Motown. Flagship harmony act the O'Jays revelled in its sumptuous arrangements and flowing rhythms, as this excellent album testifies. Producers and songwriters Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff sculpted brilliant scenarios for the group; cautionary, in the case of the exhilarating title track, or clarion calls for universal brotherhood, as exemplified in 'Love Train'. The O'Jays brought many years of experience to these recordings, and on Back Stabbers found a spiritual home for their considerable talents. The orchestral arrangements are breathtaking.
